Get Physically Fit and Kick Cancer to the Curb (guest post by David Haas)

Hearing your doctor tell you that you have a rare form of deadly cancer such as mesothelioma and that you will now be required to undergo mesothelioma treatment is a difficult pill to swallow. Finding out you have cancer is not something you ever dreamed would happen to you; it happens to other people but you never once thought you would be the recipient of this news. Unfortunately, it happens all too often. The good news is that many cancer survivors will attest to the fact that their cancer diagnosis, as horrible as it was, was a life changing day for them. Becoming a cancer patient forced them to make lifestyle changes that forever positively changed their lives during the course of their diagnosis, their treatment and now their recovery. If you have been considering making a lifestyle change but have yet to make the change, there is no time like the present to do so.

The National Cancer Institute offers information for cancer patients about the benefits of physical fitness and cancer; exercising and becoming physically fit while undergoing cancer treatments is a life changing action that won’t cure you of cancer, but it will make you healthier. The main reason why doctors recommend physical fitness for everyonenot just cancer patients – is because it is good for your body, mind and soul. Your body will never look better than it will once you start exercising regularly. In addition, your body will never feel better than when you start exercising; and neither will your mind and soul. Exercise promotes positive hormones in your body. Stress promotes negative hormones. The stress of cancer and the treatment required to fight your cancer produces so much negative hormones that it wreaks havoc on your immune system, which needs to be strong to help deal with cancer treatments and the disease itself.

Exercising produces hormones that fight the bad hormones caused by stress and improves your immune system. Since your immune system is what fights infections and illness, this is imperative to fighting cancer. Your mind will feel better after exercising because of the positive hormones, which increase your mood and your quality of life. Quality of life is important to cancer patients because the treatments often make a quality life difficult to live. In short, exercising not only makes you look better but it will make you feel better both inside and out.

Your doctor will be pleased to know you are adapting a healthier lifestyle with cancer. He will help you determine what activities are good for you while undergoing cancer treatments, such as walking, biking and swimming. Remember, treatment takes a lot out of you and you may not feel able to exercise every day, but as often as you can is just as good.

Freeze Dried Ice Cream?

Really? How is that possible? I saw these in Walmart and had to snap snap for photo memories.

Personally, I think this is JUST plain WRONG!

Speaking of JUST plain WRONG! I have a few things that have been disturbing me lately.
Here they are in NO particular order:

  • I was in the grocery store the other day behind a family of four (mommy, daddy, little girl, and little boy). Well, not so little. The young boy must have been around my son Allan's age (8-10). The only difference was that this young child was definitely OBESE. No question about it. So was his young sister and mama and daddy. THAT IS VERY DISTURBING to me. Children that young should NOT be that huge. The next thing I noticed was the grocery items they were buying: chips, Cheetos, soda, no fruit, no veggies, some meat, more chips, lots of crackers. I know it's highly unhealthy. I bet it disturbs the First Lady too being that she started a get active campaign for children.  Parents, get your children active EVERYDAY and feed them healthy foods! Allan plays outside everyday. He was upset yesterday because his friends couldn't come out and play with him. He soon found some stress relief in an exercise of his own (with some guidance from Mama).

  • This next thing that DISTURBS me is a very sensitive subject to some of my close friends and readers. I am highly disturbed when I see a woman trying to look like a man. Especially if she is obviously a pretty woman/girl. It bothers me to see girls with their pants sagging like the boys, binding their breasts, shaving their heads, and making every effort possible to look like a man. It's obvious that these girls are not heterosexual, but please take some pride in your appearance. I like to see girls looking like girls. I'm just saying.

  • The last thing that has been disturbing me is people who complain about certain characteristics in others, yet they themselves have those SAME characteristics they are complaining about in others. I wish these people would spend so much time improving themselves that they have NO time to criticize others. Just saying....

Ouch! I Have a Bunion on My Right Foot

Ok, so my right foot was in so much pain yesterday. I need to go to the doctor for this one. Needless to say, I didn’t get my Wii Fit in at all yesterday. I did today though. Today I did Yoga and Step Aerobics. I even opened advanced step. Yay ME!

Day 2 of 30 day Wii Fit Goal

Yesterday I said I was not going to go into too much detail everyday. I had a very long weekend. I spent most of it with Mommy and my nieces and nephew, and William and Allan.

I spent the night at my brother’s in Sumter yesterday. I got home this morning and had to go to William’s football banquet tonight. I had to force myself to get my Wii Fit time in. To be honest, I think I’m addicted to the Yoga.

Ok, so today I earned 15 Wii Fit Credits. I did 2 Yoga poses, 1 Strength Training exercise, Hula Hoop, Super Hula Hoop (over 300 spins!  I love that Hula Hoop), and Step Aerobics.  Oh yeah, I did that soccer head thing too.  I need to do that one more because I'm not good at that at all.

My Wii Fit age went up to 34.

Day 1 of 30 Day Wii Fit Goal Part 2

Actually this is day 1 of this 43 Things goal, but my 51st day since I started using my Wii Fit. So, the first day of this goal was so much fun for me. I started out with Yoga. I did ALL 6 of the Yoga poses available to me. Yay Keala! Then I did 4 Strength Training exercises that worked my abs, back, and legs. When I first started using my Wii Fit, I only did Yoga and Strength Training.

Today was the first time I ventured into Wii Fit Aerobics. Oh My Gooooodness. That Hula Hoop was fun. At first I didn’t quite get it, but once I got the hang of it and I LOVED it! So today I did Hula Hoop, Basic Step, and Basic Run. I got my workout on. I did so well on Hula Hoop I unlocked Super Hula Hoop.
After Aerobics, I ventured on to the Wii Fit Games. Since today was really the first time I tried those games, I didn’t do so well. I was just trying them out to see how they were anyway.

Back to Hula Hoop, I got William doing the Hula Hoop. That boy has abs of STEEL. They are diamond hard. He didn’t do well his first time, but once he got the hang of it, he did really well. When they throw the hula hoops at you, they kept hitting his big head, but he overcame that.

I probably won’t be going into this much detail everyday of this goal. I may just post my stats as I did before.
Here are my stats for day 1 of this goal:
*Wii Fit Age: 33
*BMI: Obese
*Weight: 25lbs more than I should weigh
*Today’s Time 39 minutes

Day 2 of Walking

was the day before yesterday. Wednesday.

On Tuesday I walked with Charles.
On Wednesday I walked with Sandra.

On Thursday (yesterday) I spent four hours (1-2-3-4) fricken hours at Moncrief Army Community Hospital with William. My day was shot.

Oh yeah, William has a cold. The doctor gave me some cold symptom medicine and we went home.

I have no idea how I am going to fit it in today. I have errands to run on my lunch hour. A friend made an appointment to spend time with me this evening. She said she misses me and and since I am so busy she needs to make an appointment for my time.

I just may convince her to go someplace warm to walk with me this evening. We shall see.

I Did It!!!

Yes I did.

Granted it has been cold in the mornings and evenings. So, I decided to walk for 30 minutes during my lunch hour.

I get an hour for lunch, so I ate the first 30 minutes and walked the last 30 minutes.

One day down, 29 more to go.

NOT

I did NOT walk for 30 minutes last night.

When I got home it was COLD, dark, and late.

When I woke up this morning it was COLD, dark, and way too early.

Ewww. I hate this weather.

I could go to the gym and walk for 30 minutes on the treadmill. That would work!

Starting today

Dr. Mao suggests this. Since I am not doing it, if I start today and do it for 30 days straight, I should see some type of improvement in my life and my body.

Tonight I shall walk for 30 minutes.

If you want to lose weight, CALORIES DO COUNT! If you want to lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you consume. All physical activity burns calories, even activities like standing, sitting and sleeping. The more vigorous an activity, the more calories burned. To lose 1 pound, you must burn 3500 excess calories (500 calories per day over the course of a week).
Health care professionals recommend slow weight loss as the safest and most effective plan. You lose weight grad-ually over a period of time. One-half to one pound per week slow weight loss promotes long-term loss of body fat.

If you reduce your calorie intake by 300 calories a day and increase your activity to burn 200 extra calories per day, you can expect a steady weight loss of approximately one pound per week.

The heavier a person is, the more calories they will burn. Look under your average weight category below to see how many calories you burn per 10 minutes while doing a particular activity. Or you can use a simple calorie calculator by following this link to use our Calorie Calculator to see how many calories you will burn (for your weight) while jogging.

Now I gotta figure out how to burn an extra 500 calories a day. More to come...
